We catch up with Randy Boyd, Bec TV anchorman
Bec TV, already a cult success in the US, will launch soon in the UK as a video podcast for an expected 6 episode trial run. The show has been receiving rave reviews across the pond for its captivating korfball content. We catch up with Randy Boyd, Bec TV anchorman and consumer of industrial amounts of haircare products to ask him what we should expect when we tune in.
Tell us a bit about the show, Randy.
First let me just say that I am totally stoked to be over here in the UK promoting this show. This is easily the best show I've ever done, bar none. Simple as. And I'm sorry if I'm not quite awake, y'all called me a bit earlier than I was expecting.
Apology accepted. What channel will Bec TV be on?
Well, in the US we broadcast it on PBS (which is like real cheapolocal TV). It's on a minority sports channel called KSPN-7. We're on real late at night sandwiched in-between some lesser sports to try and boost the ratings for the time slot. We'd been trying to get Korfball on TV for years when the company that produced 'Dog Judo Tonight' went under. Bang! That was our opportunity! We're on after a guest sport (which varies week to week) but it's usually something a bit nitch like Ferret Tossing or Whistling Snooker or something like that. You won't be able to receive it on your TV as it'll be podcast for you guys in the UK.
What do you mean by Podcasting?
Well, we're basically editing the BEC content together to showcase the channel in the UK. So the show will basically be clips of BEC matches with all the best goals and some awesome interviews with the players plus some other stuff, which I like to call irreverence. I'm totally stoked by it and I know you guys will be too.
So tell us a bit about yourself. You were famously ejected from the Golden Barnet Trophy Finals in 1983 for spiking an opponent's hairgel with mincemeat.
Yeah, well, I ain't proud of that. In the seventies I used to enter my hairstyle in competitions professionally. I was at the top of my game. But I let the fame get to my head, you know? Then the eighties came along and I just couldn't compete with the new hairspray technology. I suffered a couple of high profile defeats and hit rock bottom soon after that. I was drinking Gatorade on the street for, like, 8 years. But I pulled myself together and I'm back in game - whoa yeah! I think if you compare my career to a football game it would be fair to say I'm 12 for 19 in the third quarter and trying to gain 40 for 2 with a tap dancing bear play. On the way back with everything to play for and trying a play that is risky but looks good if you pull it off. That's why this korfball gig was good for me. I love the sport - playing it helped improve my life and get me back on my feet.
Can you remember your first kiss?
Shoot man! You're embarrassing me. Yeah, I was about 15 and she was the hottest cheerleader in the school. She kissed me on the lips after my computer club. I was totally stoked but I found out after that she only did it for a $10 bet. But I didn't care, as far as I'm concerned, everyone's a winner there.
How did you get into korfball?
Well, I was at the junction of 42nd and 2nd and I saw some guys playing this crazy game. It was like a revelation. Boy feed, girl feed and I thought: I dig that! So I went over and joined in. It was a bunch of boys from the hood and a group of Dutch lady backpackers. I was blown away by the pace, the flow of the game and the fact that there were women on the pitch. I never looked back and now I host BEC TV. It's like a dream, man. Plus those Dutch ladypackers were hot!
How do you prepare for a show?
Well, KSPN 7 is a busy station so I like to take a bit of time out and do a bit of 'antic meditational yoga'. I need an hour's worth of 'me' time just sitting thinking about the show. Plus I get bad gas if I move too much after my daily king size whopper meal. Oh yeah - supasize me like!
BEC TV will shortly be running 6 trial podcast episodes showing the best action, the best goals, the best news and the best interviews. Watch this space for more interviews. The trailer below can be downloaded, so if you can't make it work you better sort it out because BEC TV is essential TV. And that's a fact.
